When talking about diets, there’s no way to not mention Paleo. After all, over the years, it is one of the most well known diet programs that has risen in popularity amongst fitness enthusiasts. Sometimes referred to as the “The Cave Man Diet”, the Paleolithic or Paleo diet emphasizes pre-agricultural whole foods like pastured meat, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. The Paleo diet has become quite controversial because it challenges conventional health wisdom.

Because of this, Paleo has been prone to misconceptions and even ridicule. Here are some of the most common misconceptions about Paleo and our attempts to dispel them:

Paleo is Just a Fad

Fad diets are mostly extreme and shortsighted. They are rarely healthy regimens and promise extreme weight loss over a short period of time. Paleo is not like that. For Paleo practitioners, it’s not so much as a diet regimen but a lifestyle that aims to optimize human nutrition. Many people who have adopted Paleo have treated or healed their health issues. It’s not just a quick weight-loss tool, it’s a lifestyle change. Paleo is much more than a fad, it’s committing your body to a lifestyle change.

Paleo is Too Expensive

Healthy eating will always be labeled as expensive. While it’s true that free range and organic foods are more expensive, the same can be said with paying a doctor because of health issues. Paleo-friendly foods have budget-friendly options as well. However, you will need to put in some extra work to get them. Talk to local farmers, speak to vendors, buy in bulk or you can even grow your own. If meat is too pricey, you can just buy what you can afford and spend the rest on vegetables.

Paleo is a One-Size-Fits-All Solution

This misconception comes from those who only grasp the very basic concept of Paleo. The Paleo diet should be treated as a template for a healthier lifestyle. While there are guidelines to its basic nutritional principles, it is actually quite flexible. Not all of us are the same and each of us has his own path to optimal health. For example, there are variations of Paleo where white rice, alcohol and coffee are included. If it works for you, then it works!

With Paleo, the trick is to focus on what it is rather than what it is not. It’s not at all about living and eating like a caveman. As long as you stick to the Paleo principles, you can help adapt your diet to fit your lifestyle!
